SAT 13 & SUN 14 FEB: ‘LOVE COUNCIL HOUSING’
WEEKEND OF ACTION AGAINST THE HOUSING
The government is rushing the Housing Bill through parliament. It looks set to destroy social housing as we know it, forcing councils to sell off their homes, replacing lifetime tenancies with 2 year ones, introducing market rents for all but those on the lowest incomes and funneling government support into unaffordable ‘starter homes’ rather than the new social housing we need. It will also make it easier for private landlords to evict their tenants, and remove provision for travellers. Read more about the problems with the bill here, and sign the petition against it here.
Across London, people will be out to expose how the Housing Bill is set to destroy social housing and building resistance to it, including with valentines-themed activities with the message ‘Love council housing? Stop the housing bill!’

A guided walk around one of the densest areas of housing cooperatives in the country, including iconic buildings and award-winning architecture. Starting at Coin St Neighbourhood Centre the walk will visit eight local housing co-ops set up between the late 1970’s and early 2000’s. Find out how they were set up and the housing struggles they came out of from local residents and some of the people who were there at the beginning. The walk will include going inside some of the buildings, gardens and areas you would not normally get to see. The walk starts at 2pm outside the Coin St Neighbourhood Centre and ends at 4pm at Edward Henry House on Cornwall Rd, with tea and cake and a short film screening. (If you don’t feel like walking, you can just come for tea at 4!) There will also be opportunity to discuss the implications of new developments in the area, the Housing Bill and what it might take to set up new housing co-ops in the current climate. Organised by London Co-operative Housing Group. For more information email firstname.lastname@example.org.
